Art paper explodes at BR art store - By Heidi Huff

Even if you are the least crafty person you know, there's a project and paper waiting for you at MultiMedia. With their seemingly endless array of art papers, supplies and framing materials, you too can be an artist.

The project ideas are as eye-catching as the papers themselves. They propose using decorative paper for making blinds, book bindings, cards, collages, furniture coverings, gift wraps, invitations, lampshades, origami pieces, painting surfaces, science projects, scrapbooks, stationary sets, wall coverings and many more unusual uses. There's even a chart of which papers work best for each selected project.
The color, pattern and texture selection are unimaginable. You'll have to see it to believe it, and even that didn't work for me. According to MultiMedia owner Mike McCune, the decorative paper department lists 780 items. At any one time, they have on hand 500-600 different full sheet pages as well as cut sizes and an assortment of origami paper.

There's paper everywhere. It's hanging from lines strung up above, draped on racks, resting in trays and rolled up in tubes. Not only is the paper displayed everywhere in the store, it's also from everywhere in the world. Papers come from as far as Egypt, India, Italy, Africa, Japan, Thailand, China and Nepal. But, even good ole American-made paper has its place.
Long time employee Robin Allen relays that "it's interesting to see how the styles of paper follow fashion." The paper she pointed out to me mimicked a Japanese kimono print.

Among my favorites were the papers in the natural disaster series. They have swirls of earthy and metallic tones that seem to burst, ooze and crash off the page. Not surprisingly, they have names like tsunami, volcano and earthquake. You can ask Allen or McCune about hemp, kozo, salgo, unryu, washi, chiri and any other paper preference. But don't go asking for rice paper or you will name yourself a novice. Turns out rice paper is a common misnomer applied to Asian papers. Rice rarely plays a part in the manufacturing of papers in Asia. (Thanks for the warning you two!)
Also thanks to McCune, MultiMedia has graced the Village with it's presence and passion for paper for 31 years, the past 21 of which they've resided in their current location at the Wellington Shoppes Plaza on College Ave. Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm and Saturday, 10am to 5pm, you can stop in for some guidance, inspiration or just to stare at all that paper.
