Buzzing Around Town

A Rock and Roll Weekend in Indianapolis was featured in New York Magazine online. The piece is great. I'm thrilled to see positive national recognition of our music scene. The clearly brilliant author, Amy Zavatto highlighted Broad Ripple favorites, Luna Music, Birdy's Bar and Grill, Melody Inn, Broad Ripple Brew Pub, Taste Café and Marketplace, Petite Chou, the Monon Trail, Rusted Moon Outfitters, Alley Cat Lounge, the Red Key Tavern. . . and ME! And in Buzzing Around Town tradition, I'm on page 6 of the article.

Art vs. Art
Fountain Square Theatre
September 7, 2007
I know that the Fountain Square Theatre is a bit out of the greater Broad Ripple area. Since I counted eight Broad Ripple Gazette staffers and several Broad Ripple residents at the event, I think it should be covered here.
Art vs. Art is not your typical gallery show. The event started last month with a paint day in four cities -- Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus (Ohio) and Louisville. The artists were given a canvas, brushes, paints and 4 hours to create their masterpiece. All of the paintings were posted online for voting. The top 16 competed in the contest, in a one-on-one competition.
The paintings were paired randomly on the stage and voted on by audience applause. The winner was temporarily spared destruction. The Wheel of Death would be spun and the fate of the losing painting would be determined. The only way to spare the painting from death was for an audience member to purchase it by bidding in the live auction, waving their paper boxing glove in the air. One Wheel of Death spin landed on "Dirty Sanchez." Someone purchased the painting sparing it what would be a very ugly death (I didn't know how ugly until I Googled "Dirty Sanchez" -and if you don't know what a Dirty Sanchez is, don't look it up. Spare yourself, please!). Emcee Mike Wiltrout asked "What does a guy have to do to get a Dirty Sanchez around here?" As the winner walked off with the painting, Mike asked, "How does it feel to be the most hated woman in the room?" to a cheering crowd. I turned around to see who purchased the painting, and it was our own Tammy Lieber (see her column, page 12). Thank you Tammy, for sparing me the Dirty Sanchez image.
Amory Abbott was crowned the champion. He collected a check for $2500 and bragging rights for the next year. You can see more Amory's work for the rest of the month at Indy Hostel (4903 Winthrop Ave). Go on www.primarycolours.org to see the final 16 paintings.

The ReachArounds
Daddy Jacks
September 8, 20007
The ReachArounds (speaking of terms you should not Google) played a great, get-up-and-dance show at Daddy Jacks. Scott Sanders, Keith Carey and Jeff Ayers shared vocal duties and harmonize wonderfully together. The great Scott Ballantine awed us with his guitar playing. To quote Tammy Lieber, "Scott makes playing the guitar seem like anyone can do it." Jeff Ayers (BenWah Salami) was in fine form playing harmonica, various percussion tools and homage to Luciano Pavarotti. As always, the The ReachArounds are big fun.

Vess Ruhtenberg, 19Clark25, Chevy Downs
Spin
September 14, 2007
The lineup for the night promised a special guest. I wish I would have known how special is was and I would have hustled out of the fundraiser I attended a little earlier. Vess Ruhtenberg sang a solo set. I got there in time to hear the last song. Rumor has it that we may be hearing a little bit more of Vess in the Gazette soon. Stay tuned.
19Clark25 played a raucous set of down home rock and roll with a big splash of country thrown in. I was happy to see the lovely Cara Walthers in all of her standup bass playing glory.
Chevy Downs only play when the stars align. Singer, songwriter and guitar player David Moore is based here. Banjo and mandolin player Seth Greathouse lives in Destin, FL. Los Angles based Tim Jones sings, writes and plays guitar. Chicago's Jason Brammer plays bass. Drummer Andy Schneider lives in Nashville, TN and lead guitar player, Dobro and pedal steel master John Byrne lives in Indianapolis.
Chevy Downs plays Southern rock, in a good way. I cannot remember the last time I saw a band have so much fun on stage. They are all tremendous musicians and put on an amazing show. As you know I'm a great fan of the pedal steel. I lurked around John Byrne's side of the stage so I'd be close by when he played, and I was not disappointed.
My dressy dress and swanky shoes were feeling a little uncomfortable by 2:00 am, but I was glad that I stayed.

Amy Lashley farewell show
Lockerbie Pub
September 15, 2007
I crashed Amy Lashley's going away party at the Lockerbie Pub. Amy and Otis Gibbs are moving to Nashville, TN this month. Amy has worked at the Pub for the last year. Since we used to work together at CATH, I figured that made me a second cousin of the Pub. Amy played with Keith Carey (co-owner of Some Guys Pizza, where I also used to work - more cousins!) and just-moved-to-Nashville-and-celebrating-his-birthday Scott Ballantine. Amy blew the crowd away with her amazing voice and terrific original songs. She'll be missed here, but I can't wait to see her name on a marquee in Nashville. Happy trails Amy.

Previews:
Everthus the Deadbeats, Red Light Driver, Loretta, Those Young Lions
Thursday, September 27, 2007
Doors 8:00, $7, 21 and over
The Vogue 6259 N. College Ave.
The Vogue is keeping their word to book local music and this will be an amazing show. Everthus the Deadbeats bill themselves an freak-pop, but I think quirky is a better description. Red Light Driver says they put the avant-garde back in pop music, and I believe them. I can't wait to hear them live. I've been a Loretta fan for years, and I'm glad to see them playing out more. Those Young Lions include drummer Devon Ashley, and that is enough for me to know that they are great.
The Vogue has a swanky new Web site, take a peek.

Kevin Fitzpatrick art opening
Friday, September 28, 2007
7-10 pm, free, all ages
Indy Hostel
4903 Winthrop Ave
Kevin Fitzpatrick's newest show "Travel and Transportation" kicks off with an opening reception on Friday, September 28. The show will hang through October. I think the Hostel is the perfect place for a show about travel.
If you have not been to the Hostel this is the perfect time to poke around and look.
Here is Kevin's artist statement:
The truth of the matter, is that you're way over there, and I'm way over here. But in between that distance, our two minds should meet. Within seconds we could start communicating, learning, searching and acknowledging the wonderful fact that we all have completely different thoughts. Life as we know it is always moving and changing.
The Hostel is also featuring live music on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. Check out the Web site for more information.

Rocky Ripple Festival
Saturday, September 29, 2007
Hohlt Park

This is the 8th year for the Rocky Ripple Festival. There will be children's activities, artist displays and music all day. The Rocky Ripple Community Association always does a great job with the food (yummy and reasonably priced) and the Broad Ripple Brew Pub is joining the fun this year with beer and wine.
Here's the entertainment lineup:
11:30-12:30 Finest Grain, featuring Kent Vernon and Sean (I just figured out that we live two houses apart) Jackson, 12:40-1:40 Mysteries Bloom, 2:00-3:00 Zorba and Miss Kimmy, 3:20-4:20 The Kyle Herd Band, 4:40-5:40 King Street Conspiracy.

Saturday nights at Just Judy's
2210 E 54th Street
317-254-8796
Just Judy's has booked bands on Saturdays for the next month. If you have not had a chance to eat Judy's amazing cooking or experience the neighborhood friendliness of Just Judy's, now is your chance. Rumor has it that if you say you're there to hear the band, they'll buy you an appetizer. Tell them I said so!

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
