Toby of Girdwood, Alaska
When Bill was driving me to Anchorage to catch my flight home, he asked, "Aren't the people of Girdwood beautiful?" I said, "To tell you the truth, I think a whole lot of beauty has been compressed into a few people in Girdwood." He knew that I was referring to Toby.

Toby blows glass for a living and loves it. He had us watching several hours of Dale Chihuly. I have not seen the Chihuly sculpture at the Children's Museum, but damn!-I've seen some Chihuly now!
Toby owns a schoolbus which he uses to chauffeur local bands to gigs across Alaska. Toby drove us to a couple of music festivals and it was a blast. In the bus, Toby has a couch, chair and ottoman made of Italian leather. Quotes from Rumi adorn the bus walls.
Knowledge of the natural world is treasured by Alaskans. Toby is well-known for his talents in nature. Toby walked us into the lush rain forest to the base of a mountain which formed a stream. On the trail to the stream, Toby picked berries and weeds for me to taste. I asked Toby if he could survive in the forest. He laughed and said, "Yes, and I would be healthier."
When Toby took Yo and I salmon fishing, he caught his limit. While Toby was reeling them in, I wrote him this poem:
Toby
They should give medals
for people like you
Gold and
diamonds with stones of blue
But they don't so I hope
this poem
will do
w/Love
