Touch of Grass
The Wine Cellar (lower level of the Corner Wine Bar)
So Shame on me for not checking out the music at The Wine Cellar before now. Actually, I did pop my head down there once, but that is a whole 'nother story involving a blind date that went awry.
The Wine Cellar was the perfect place to escape the pre-race, rain-soaked, Friday night-fray of Broad Ripple. Touch of Grass is made up of a talented group of core musicians Pat Brunner, Al Stone and Marc Imboden. They toss in whoever else might show up. This night, they were joined by the lovely Greg O'Haver. I was thoroughly impressed by the music. One thing I love about bluegrass musicians is how they give homage to their predecessors. They played songs by Earl Scruggs, The Kingston Trio and lots of other bluegrass greats with a good sprinkling of history thrown in.
The banter between the songs is also impressive. Think Prairie Home Companion meets a vaudeville act.
These guys all have day jobs in the entertainment business. Pat heads Pat Brunner and Associates, an entertainment booking agency. Since 1963 he has been part of the very successful band, The Gateway Trio. You might recognize Al Stone, or a least his voice, from his years on the radio. "The Rock" was an on-air personality for WNAP, WIFE and WIBC for years. He continues to record music and do voice-overs. Marc Imboden is well known in the Christian Music world. His song "You Are Holy (Prince of Peace)" has been catapulted in to fame by the singer Michael W. Smith. Greg O'Haver was recently named the Top Faith Based Musician by NUVO. He has been a fixture on the music scene for ages.
Touch of Grass plays every Friday night at the Wine Cellar, below the Corner Wine Bar.

Caleb Hawkins
Broad Ripple Farmers Market (Behind BRHS)
Caleb Hawkins was set up bright and early for the first Farmer's Market of the season. Bright might be a bit of an exaggeration if we were talking about the sky. It was a little gloomy and drizzly, but that did not dampen the crowds enthusiasm or Caleb's music.
Caleb is young, but has a very traditional sound to his music. He's a multi-instrumentalist and a singer/songwriter. He grew up surrounded by musicians; he comes from five generations of musicians. He released his debut album last winter. You can find Steel Drivin' Man at Indy CD and Vinyl and Frank's Violins.

Steve Poltz
Local's Only
Steve Poltz has worn many hats in his musical career. He fronted the rock band the Rugburns, he has a great career as a singer/songwriter and he just released a children's album. Steve is memorable to me because he's so darn happy and charming. His fan base is incredible. There were people who had been following him from show to show for the weekend. He had fans from other towns and states there. He greeted them all from the stage and stopped for photographs between songs. I was lucky enough to snag a cookie from one of his fans "the cookie man."
The icing on the cake is that he's a great story teller. I love his songs about growing up Catholic and how confusing the sacraments can be for a kid. Steve co-wrote with Jewel her hit "You Were Meant for Me." It is the most-played song in Billboard chart history. He told a story about watching American Idol this season and seeing a contestant sing the song. The contestant wound up crying over the criticism of her singing. As he was watching it, he was wishing he could time-travel ala Billy Pilgrim in Slaughter House Five and not write the song so the girl would not cry.
I've been listening to his children's CD, The Barn, and it is really fun. All of you parents in the crowd will appreciate the "clean your room" song.

The R59 Shootout
5 on 5 Charity Hoops Tourney
Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, 2007
Broad Ripple High School
1115 Broad Ripple Ave.
1:00 tip off both days $300 per team
I had the pleasure of speaking to Rosevelt Colvin on the telephone this week. He's hosting his first annual 5-on-5 Hoops Tourney to benefit Broad Ripple High School athletics. Rosevelt is a 1995 honors graduate of BRHS. He played football while a student at Purdue, graduating with a degree in industrial management. He was drafted by the Bears in 1999 and is now with the New England Patriots. He has played with the number 59 on his jersey for most of his career.
Rosevelt does plenty of charity work through the NFL and in the New England area, but he wanted to do something in his home town. He feels a responsibility as a graduate of Indianapolis Public Schools and as an area business man (he owns the UPS store across from BRHS).
The proceeds from the tourney will go toward funding two scholarships for 2008 BRHS graduates and to the athletic program.
I asked Rosevelt about his basketball career at BRHS. He laughed and said, "as the tallest, thickest guy on the team, I always played power-forward." There is still room in the tourney for players. There will be two divisions, the under-18 and the "old guys" - his words.
Even if you cannot play, consider sponsoring a team. For more information, call 617.268.001, visit www.R59.com or stop by the UPS store, where his lovely mother would be happy to help.

Don Weaks has been a fixture on the Broad Ripple music scene since before there was a Broad Ripple Music scene. Don is battling cancer, and the Red Key is throwing a fundraiser. Come in anytime after 5:00, I'll make you a cheeseburger and put the tip in Don's jar.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
