Buzzing Around Town

Remember all the music I saw last time? The only music I heard in the last two weeks was along the course of the 500 festival mini marathon/5K course. Thanks to all the amazing bands who were set up and ready to play at 6:00 am.

NUVO Cultural Vision Awards
Thursday, May 10, 2007
Deer-Zink Pavilion
Indianapolis Museum of Art
This is the ninth year for the NUVO Cultural Vision Awards. Sandy Reiberg, Magnet Director for Broad Ripple High School's Center for Arts and Humanities, was the Lifetime Achievement Honoree. She has been at the center of arts education at IPS for almost 25 years, and she has been at BRHS since 2001. In her acceptance speech her passion for the arts shone through. I'm thrilled she is in our neighborhood.
Other Cultural Vision Award Winners included Joe Vuskovich from Yats and Ken Honeywell, founder of the Tonic Ball. I'm pleased as punch to know both of those creative men.

Joey Ramone Birthday Show
Punk Rock Night
The Melody Inn 3826 Illinois
Saturday, May 19, 2007 10 pm, $6.
Joey Ramone and I shared a birthday. He was born exactly 10 years before I was. I got to see The Ramones play on May 19, 1983 at the Vogue - it was my twenty-second birthday, and at the height of my punk-rock days. I had short spiky hair, wore heavy black eyeliner and weighed 95 pounds. I swear that Joey nodded and smiled when I yelled "happy birthday" while getting squished at the front of the stage.
Concerts on Joey's birthday have been a tradition since his death in 2001. The Joey Ramone Foundation for Lymphoma Research throws a birthday bash in NYC each year. Tickets for the party typically sell out before the line up is announced.
Luckily for us, there is a Joey Ramone birthday party closer to home. Dayton's The Luxury Pushers, Indianapolis-based JJPeason Project and Kentucky's Brody's Militia will be playing.

Broad Ripple Art Fair
Indianapolis Art Center
Saturday, May 19, 10:00-7:00
Sunday, May 20, 10:00-5:00
The musical line-up is incredible! Of course the Art Fair will be chock full of great art, but the music component is terrific and well worth the price of admission. I could not have booked it any better myself. There are 4 stages and the music starts at 10:30 - you could probably catch a bit of all of the bands if you hustle.

Here is my plan:

Saturday:
10:30-WYJZ Café Stage, Lord of the Yum Yum. I cannot even begin to describe the Lord of the Yum Yum, not that I have enough words to even try. I can say that I'm always gleefully happy when I see him.
11:00 - B 105.7 The Great Lawn Stage, Stasia Demos. Stasia's music is as charming as she is.
1:15 - Riverfront Concert Stage, the lovemeknots. The most interesting person I know is in the lovemeknots. And I mean that Evan Finch is interesting in the fascinating way, not the creepy-turn-your-head way. the lovemeknots played steadily from 1990 to 1995 and occasionally reunite for a show, catch them while you can.
2:00 - Café Stage, Michael Kelsey. Michael's guitar playing will knock your socks off. I'm not kidding.
3:45 - Riverfront Stage, Guitar Summit Trio. The Guitar Summit is lead by Bill Lancton and features more than guitars.
4:00 - The Great Lawn Stage, Hog Eye Navvy. Shanty songs, need I say more?
5:45 - Riverfront Stage, Gordon Bonham & Jess Richmond. These two are terrific on their own. Combine them for a special treat.
Sunday:
11:00 - Café Stage, Max Allen Band. This will be a rockin' way to start out your Sunday.
Noon - WFYI Kids' Stage, Ruditoonz - my niece is becoming a Rudi groupie (following in Auntie Nora's footsteps). She wore her pink Ruditoonz tee shirt to the pool last summer and Rudi was playing. How fun is that?
1:00 - Riverfront Stage, Born Again Floozies, tubas and tap dancing. Don't miss it.
3:30 - The Great Lawn Stage, Haulin' Ashes, I don't know anything about this band but the name is fun.

Nick Ivanovich
Indy Hostel Concert Series
4903 Winthrop Ave
Thursday, May 24, 2007 7:30
I met Nick when his lovely daughter Rachel worked at CATH, Inc. Nick also counts as our most successful 'fix-up." His amazing wife Beth was also a regular CATH customer. . . and the rest is history.
I recently wrote about the Top 10 faith-based musicians for NUVO. I'm not good at ranking people, so I choose the #1 musicians and listed the rest alphabetically. They only had room for the Top 5, so the list was cut in half. Nick was on my list, but by virtue of his name starting with an N, he was chopped.
Nick grew up listening to traditional Ukrainian folk music. The sweet melody of those songs has transferred to his folk music. His latest album is titled "Happy House," and it is a happy CD.

Music News:
* I'm still looking for a few more musicians to play the Broad Ripple Farmers Market. Contact me at queenbeenora@gmail.com
* We'll miss Scott Ballantine and Funhouse Guitars and Records at 54th Street and the Monon Trail. Look for Jon Zeps and Vibes Music to move in to that spot soon. You can still catch Scott playing music with his jazz trio - as a solo act and with the ReachArounds.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
