Harvest Dinner kicked off 2007 Farmers' Market - By Elizabeth Hague
posted: May 04, 2007

By Elizabeth Hague

Alan and I attended the Spring Harvest Dinner, which raised funds for the Broad Ripple Farmers' Market. It was a six-course meal featuring only foods that are grown locally and provided by vendors of the BR Farmers' Market.
The portions were artfully arranged and small, but I was full before the Rhubarb "Tart" was served for dessert. I was pleasantly surprised that everything was so good because I have been labeled by some as a finicky eater.
Dinner was prepared by Neal Brown at L'explorateur Restaurant, which is located at 6523 Ferguson Street. Our reservation was for 6:30 and the restaurant was already nearly full. Each course was served by a team of servers and then described by one of them.

Neal adds finishing touches to the third course - Jerusalem Artichoke soup with fresh yogurt cheese.

I thought the first course was the most amusing: "Grilled Asparagus and Smoked Mushroom Velouté". It was one small asparagus with sauce and came on a tiny, stylish white plate - but it was so tasty.
My favorite course may have been the fourth: "Deconstructed Shepherd's Pie". It consisted of a lamb meatball resting on a nest of mashed All Blue Peruvian potatoes that were purple like a blueberry paste. It was the best part of a Shepherd's Pie - kicked up a notch and without the pastry.
A Rhubarb 'Tart' was served for dessert, and the title made me think it might also be deconstructed. Inside-out may describe the tart, as it was rhubarb over a meringue disc with some English custard drizzled over it. I thought it was the perfect ending for a delicious meal.
Two more Harvest Dinners are coming up: one at H2O Sushi on Broad Ripple Avenue and one at the new Barking Dog at 49th & Penn. Keep your eye on the Gazette for the dates or call Ross Faris (251-4130) for details.
If you would like to make your own Harvest Dinner, visit the Broad Ripple Farmers' Market beginning May 26th (2007) behind Broad Ripple High School. If you're not sure what to make, I'll bet the vendors will have recipes to give you suggestions and guide you.
