The Brugge Brasserie
I have to admit that I am biased about this next place since Brugge Brasserie is one of my favorite places to not only eat, but also grab some of the best Naptown brew. Brugge is the creation of some Indy natives, including brewer Ted Miller and actor Abraham Benrubi (formerly on ER and currently on ABC's Men In Trees).
I will not say too much about the food because I am trying to stay focused on the beer, but I will say that it probably is the best new original restaurant in the entire city, and is worth a try.
Back to the beer. Brewer Ted Miller knows his beer, and has recently brewed in Asia. It is a love for old world Belgian beer, however, that gives Brugge its authentic Franco-Belgian pub feel. The fact that the beer is brewed on site helps, too.
My favorite type of beer is a full bodied wheat or pale ale, so I am never disappointed by the choices on the menu. The beer on tap, however, does change as one brew is drained by thirsty patrons and replaced with a new brew. My favorite is the "Triple de Ripple". It is a mighty fine beer, but be warned because it is also a powerful beer. You may be feeling a buzz before you can say "pommes frites".
My visit to Brugge was during the first week of January and the choices on tap were the Black, Dab Pilsner, and the Flemmish Sour Red. Now, if you are going to do a beer justice here, order a side of "pommes frites", otherwise known as French fries, and some delectable dipping sauces.
I drank the Pilsner - It had all around good flavor and was a very balanced beer. Here is a secret of mine: I hate dark beers, and cannot stand Guinness even though I am Irish. So I apologize that I cannot comment on the Black, although, as I looked around the restaurant, many other patrons seemed to be enjoying it.
My friend branched out and tried the Flemmish Sour Red. The waiter cautioned that it truly was sour, and he was not lying. The Red was very interesting. It reminded me more of a cider or some sort of Medieval tonic. I was sad that the Triple de Ripple was not on tap but I realize how quickly it goes. It makes me wish that Brugge bottled its beer, especially the Triple de Ripple. This is why I am going to give Brugge 5 Pints out of 5. It is really a beer connoisseur's heaven.
