Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

'Tis the season for lists-favorite books, top ten fashion faux pas, five worst movies and such. I could make a list of the lists. My intention all year was to write an end of the year wrap-up listing my favorite shows. Looking through my notebook has left me paralyzed with the fear of choosing my favorites. First of all, I'm an "every day is a new day" sort of woman. I appreciate everything I see, even if it not my taste. I love it that people will put themselves out there to perform. I would love to learn to play bass, but I would not be able to play in public. I'm not even sure I could leave the basement. So, thanks for all of you who played for us. We sure do appreciate it.
Here is my informal list of favorite things.

Musicians I go out of my way to see: Tad Armstrong, Otis Gibbs, Amy Lashley and Chad Mills.
The thing I'm still kicking myself over: I missed Maura Ahearn's guitar solo at the Upper Room. I still cannot believe that I didn't see it. It was one of those nights that I tried to squeeze in too much music. I got there in time to hear about it. I'll be there for the next one.
Things that made my life easier: The beloved Apple iBook, my Moleskin Reporters Notebook (available at Big Hat Books) and the wireless access at the Northside Newsstand Café and Indy Hostel.
Things that made writing about music easier: MusicialFamilyTree.com, indianapolismusic.net and MySpace.com
The people I'm most grateful for: The door folks, bartenders, sound guys and club owners that make me feel so welcome-and let me hang out in their space.
The people I get tongue-tied around: You. I know that I get all blushy and weird when someone talks to me about the Buzzing Around column, but I really appreciate it. You should see how geeked-out I get when I see someone reading it. Thank you.

Northside Newsstand Party
Jazz Kitchen
Saturday, December 23rd, 2006
Once again, it was technically Sunday when I arrived at the Northside Newsstand Party. I worked earlier at the Red Key, where Russel Settle played Silent Night on his harmonica. If that does not bring a tear to your eye, nothing will.
It was DJ Russell Johnson who was getting the crowd worked up at the NNS party. I am in awe of Russell. He kept the crowd happy and dancing, and I think that would be a challenge with the diversity of the folks on the dance floor.
I was feeling a little "Match Girl"-like when I arrived. I looked through the window at all the cool kids who were dressed up and dancing. I was wearing the clothes I'd waitressesed in and smelled like the Red Key (think cheeseburgers, beer and smoke). It was all okay once I walked in the door. That is what I love about the Northside Newsstand-the great sense of community they have created. Thanks Joe, Tim, Matt and Kevin for another great year-and the free wireless.

Middletown Reunion Show
Thursday, January 11, 2007 9:30-ish
The Upper Room (above the Broad Ripple Steak House) 929 E. Westfield Blvd.
We all know how I feel about Tad Armstrong: he is my all-time favorite musician. If I was stuck on a deserted island, I'd want Tad there. I'm not so sure how Tad feels about that. My favorite way to hear Tad is when he's performing with Middletown. Stasia Demos, Aaron Stroup and Tad have not played together for almost two years. Interestingly, the Upper Room was the site of the last Middletown show. Aaron and Tad toured this summer with Susan Cowsill, and I'm sure they have some good road stories.

Jill Connor Browne, a best selling non-fiction writer is celebrating her first novel. "The Sweet Potato Queens' First Big-Ass Novel: Stuff We Didn't Actually Do, But Could Have, and May Yet." It sounds like you should be prepared for some big-ass fun.

Dave Dugan
Baby Teeth
Thursday, January 18th, 2007 8:00pm
Melody Inn
I spent many a Sunday morning listening to Dave Dugan's Hangover Café on WRZX (X-103). It was perfect coffeehouse music. Dave is also a terrific comedian. He'll be opening the show for Chicago band Baby Teeth. Baby Teeth is releasing their new CD next month, so I'm sure they will be full of new songs and fun.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
