Broad Ripple High School students voice opinions on AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination - By Deneisha Obermuller, Andrea Thomas, Brianna Thomas and Iesha Tyler
posted: Dec. 01, 2006

AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, was founded twenty-seven years ago by Mary Catherine Swanson. It is one of the many programs offered at Broad Ripple High School. The purpose of AVID is to help academically average students stay organized and introduce students to career and college choices.
In order for students to join AVID, their teachers must nominate them for the program. Students also have to meet the requirements of the program-hold at least a 2.0 G.P.A., be the first generation in your family to attend college, and have a low family income (one which would probably not permit college attendance).
As AVID students, we all had problems when we entered the program. It was a big change for us, and it was hard for us to adjust. AVID is a great program and we know that it will help us prepare for our future. However, we felt some of the things that we did in class didn't benefit us at all.
Andrea: When I first entered the AVID program I didn't like it because I had to go through schedule changes and be separated from all of my friends. I didn't understand why I had to learn to take good notes or carry around a huge three ring binder. Now that I've been in the program for awhile, I know that taking good notes is a good way for me to be organized in college. AVID is benefiting me because I receive the help with the classes that I'm struggling in.
Brianna: When I first came to AVID I really didn't like it. We got these really huge three ring binders that we had to put every class assignment in. I really wasn't about to do that, but Mrs. Boulden, our AVID teacher, told us that the binder played an important percentage in our grade - so I started carrying it. The first couple of weeks were horrible. Now the class is more organized and we have one tutor every other week. For any one that wants to be in it, I think that they should. It helps us to prepare for college life.
Deneisha: I feel AVID is a great program to be in. AVID teaches you life goals and how to be a responsible adult. Before I came into AVID I wasn't as organized as I should have been. AVID is a wonderful program to get you ready for college. If I had known about AVID before, I would have been in it without a doubt, and I will succeed in whatever I set my mind to in life. AVID is helping me accomplish those goals.
Iesha: AVID is a great program, but sometimes seems to add more work than necessary. I know that the work was designed to help us develop better study habits, but the work can get tedious and just nerve-wracking. I did do my work but not as well as I could have, and I did need a little help but I, most likely, would have never asked for help. Since I was recommended for AVID and I got accepted, I get the help and am developing better study habits.
