BR Levee project phase II: road closure locations - By Ashley Plummer
posted: Dec. 01, 2006

The construction of the White River floodwall will bring several street and lane closures in Indianapolis, including a handful of spots in Broad Ripple.
A description issued by John Oakley of The Indianapolis Department of Public Works stated that contractors shall provide and maintain detour routes by installing signs, barricades and other traffic control measures. In the case of this particular construction, the contractor is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAC).
In line with the required applications for street and lane closure permits, the following are the specifics for lane and road closures around the Broad Ripple Area:
67th Street and vicinity: To permit the detour of vehicle traffic, 67th Street, Ferguson Street and Cornell Avenue will be closed at separate times for construction of the gate foundations and installation of the gate closures. Detours will be provided and maintained. Street closures shall be limited to a continuous period of 30 calendar days for construction of each gate foundation and two days for installation of the steel gates. The contractor may close one lane of 67th Street between Ferguson Street and Cornell Avenue for construction of the floodwall in that area.
Westfield Boulevard: During construction modifications to the Indianapolis Water Canal Intake Structure, construction of the toe drain in Westfield Boulevard pavement, and installation of the floodwall's sheet piling, the contractor may close Westfield Boulevard between Riviera Drive and the entrance to the Reserve at Broad Ripple Condominiums for a single period not to exceed 60 continuous calendar days. During the road closure, the contractor will provide and maintain the detour route and will maintain local two-way traffic for residents of The Reserve at Broad Ripple Condominiums.
The Monon Trail: Construction of a gate closure and a section of the floodwall will necessitate periodic closures to the Monon Trail. The trail will be closed for periods not exceeding 30 calendar days during the construction of a gate closure. Other trail closures will be limited to periods when the contractor is directly involved in construction of project features. When construction procedures permit, the contractor will open the Monon for weekend and evening uses for the public.
There will be a pedestrian detour established along Cornell Avenue between the existing wooden stairway and an existing gravel path near the intersection of 66th Street and Cornell Avenue. The use of the staircase will be eliminated with the construction of the ramp bypass off the trail.
Closure Notifications: The contractor will coordinate with Indy Parks and Greenways regarding public notification of trail closures. Signs advertising closures on the Monon will also be posted to notify pedestrians and bike traffic.
