Buzzing Around Town

Happy Anniversary to me, Happy Anniversary to me. . . this is my one-year anniversary of writing this column, and ironically the shortest one I've written. This has been an amazing year. I've learned a ton of things, some basic grammar being at the top of the list.
The Broad Ripple Gazette has opened a whole new world for me. I now vote on the Top Ten Live list of shows for indianapolismusic.net and INTake and I write an occasional preview for NUVO. My heart belongs to the Gazette though. Thank you Alan for taking a chance on me, and special praise to Merryn for her editing skills.

Steve Poltz
October 30, 2006
Locals Only
As you know, I'm a fan of singer/songwriters. Some are so angst ridden that I worry about their emotional health, but Steve Poltz is not one of them! Several people recommended Steve to me, and I can see why: he's enthusiastic and charming. A member of the band Rugburns, Steve dated Jewel and co-authored her hit You Were Meant For Me. A good number of his songs are based on his personal history and life experience. I could especially relate to his songs about growing up Catholic. As a six-year-old, the mystery of communion is a lot to comprehend. I'm glad that I went to the show, and it was fun to laugh with a songwriter.

Marine Corps 231st Birthday
November 10, 2006
The Red Key Tavern
It's not often that the piano is played at the Red Key Tavern. As with everything there are rules, the first one being that you actually have to know how to play the piano. Chopsticks does not count. That detail cuts out most of the Red Key population. Paul "Redman" Redmond, however, does know how to play the piano. For the last seven years on November 10th, you can find a group of Marines singing the Marine Corps Hymn gathered around the piano. This group, mostly Rocky Ripple Veterans Association members, meets at the Red Key to celebrate the anniversary of the Marine Corp being founded. Chris Wright took some time from the festivities to share this history: the Marine Corps was founded in Philadelphia's Tun Tavern; Chris was active in the Corps from February 1967 to April 1970; the Rocky Ripple group built the memorial you can find just over the 53rd Street Bridge.

Chicago band Califone is an experiential post-rock band. They are named for the popular manufacturer of turntables and tape recorders found in schools in the 1960's. Take some time out from your turkey basting and cranberry mashing to hear some fun music.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
