Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes #63

The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from the original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I have transcribed all the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

In the last installment: 1898 election bills paid
Here is the sixty-third installment:

Broad Ripple
17th May 1898

The Board met in special session all present
On motion of H.C. Gresh a bill for $5.00 was allowed M.R. Lickens for work done on tax duplicate.
On motion of C.L. Kirk the taxes of Fergason Bros. for 1897 amounting to $4.86 was allowed for attending and taking care of fire apperatis.
On motion of C.L. Kirk. J.H. Fergason was appointed Fire chief & instructed to keep the engine in working order and purchase any necessary repairs for the engine at a salary of 50¢ per month.
On motion of H.C. Gresh a bill in favor of O.B.Bordman for $7.50 was allowed for 73 loads of gravil.
On motion of H.C. Gresh M. Dawson & R.C. Light was allowed the privilege of laying an inch gas line along the north side of Shelby St. from Morgan St. [now Guilford Avenue] to west end of Shelby St. [now Broad Ripple Avenue] line to be laid 20 inches deep

7th June 1898
The Board met in regular session all present. minutes of last meeting read and approved.
The bond of L.F. Pierce $500.00 as town Marshall with Lewis Hoffman and J.H. Campbell as suritees was approved and accepted
The Marshal (L.F. Pierce's) salary $25.00 for month ending June 10th was allowed
A Bill of $1.95 was allowed Frank Shields for one days service as deputy marshal.
On motion of H.C. Gresh Tom Jones was appointed Deputy Marshal
A special meeting was called for Thursday the 16th June 1898 for the purpose of fixing up the Tax Receipt book. Approved as read
