Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen
posted: Jul. 14, 2006
During the last week of June, Broad Ripple U.M.C. and Union Chapel U.M.C. joined forces and hosted a joint Vacation Bible School. By combining our efforts we were able to minister to many more children than either church would have done on their own. The cooperation was a special blessing, and it occurred to me that this is what God intends for His people. We can do so much more by combining our talents and energy than we can do alone. This holds true for individuals as well as churches.
Besides the growing, learning, and sharing, new friends were made and new relationships formed. As people from each church shared with each other, much common ground was discovered. There was a lot of positive energy flowing as each individual shared their gifts to accomplish all that needed to be done that week.
In American society, we have become a nation of people who cocoon. We value the strength of the individual who overcomes obstacles and problem-solves alone. That sounds great, but if we're honest we'd have to admit that is a really lonely way to live life. Connecting with people and working together creates something bigger than ourselves and gives us a sense of purpose in this life.
I would greatly encourage everyone to find a place to connect with people who are working to create something positive in their lives. More cooperation between people, churches, cities, and dare I say it, countries, just might pay great and unexpected dividends.
