Random Rippling - Damon Shows Photos at BRHS
posted: Jun. 02, 2006
Broad Ripple High School has added a photo exhibition in the foyer of the auditorium. The photos are the first from Damon Kasberg, a new photographer. Damon just graduated from Broad Ripple's School of Media and Communication.
A few months ago Fred Sisson, a 35-year Nikon employee, came to speak to a class in the Media and Communication Small School. Damon expressed an interest in learning photography; Fred suggested that he get the book The Family of Man by Edward Steichen and a digital camera. Damon did both and began taking pictures very soon afterwards. When Fred returned to BRHS he was amazed at the photos Damon had taken, so he showed prints of the photos to several professional photographer colleagues.
Damon Kasberg described the shooting details of the picture taken of flowers growing in a crack in the sidewalk by his house.
Joe McNally of National Geographic Time/Life Magazine commented, "This is not a 'nice' set of pictures - which is a good thing. This, far more importantly, is a compelling, raw, unvarnished and interesting take on the world from a largely untrained eye. Again, this is strength."
Damon's work showed so much promise that Fred arranged to get an advanced Nikon digital SLR camera for him. The professional-grade camera will allow Damon to better control his photographic experiments. Just based on the initial set of prints, Damon was offered an internship in Colorado, complete with a car. He has not decided if he will pursue that internship or study photo journalism at Western Kentucky, where he has been accepted.
I recommend that you visit BRHS to see Damon's photos - although you may have to wait until Fall, as school is out for the summer.
