Poetic Thoughts - COMMITMENT - by C.W. Pruitt II

COMMITMENT

When my father was ten he was baptized and he also made a commitment to Christian ministry. He was considered very young to make such a commitment, but in his heart he knew that was what he wanted to do.
Not long after, dad began attending an adult Bible study a couple of miles from his home. The members of the Bible study soon became enamored with the little man who knew his Bible and was willing to walk two miles to participate.
My earliest memories of my father's ministries came in my birth town of Columbus, Ohio. My father was the pastor of Southwood Christian Church near the heart of the city. We lived in a parsonage close to the church.
At the time, my father was working on his Doctorate of Ministry and he chose as his dissertation Working With Widows. Dad assembled a cheerful army of widows for the project. These widows loved each other and they LOVED my father.
The widows were extremely active in the church. My fondest memories of this special group developed after church on Sundays. We would eat at Schmidt's Sausage House in German Village. In no time, the place would be roaring with laughter. I can almost taste the cream puffs as I write.
Ten years ago I was moving from Cleveland, Ohio, to Miami Beach. Dad and I decided to get together in Columbus to reminisce before I headed south.
We arrived on a Saturday and met with Betty Weber, one of our favorite widows. She called up another widow and said, "You need to come to church tomorrow." The other widow said, "Now Betty, you know I can't do that. I'm 90 years old and I have artificial hips and knees. Plus, I just had open heart surgery. The doctor told me that the next time I leave the house could be my last." Betty said, "Carl Pruitt will be there with his son Chip." The other widow said, "I'll be there!"
At that moment I learned that a loving heart and commitment to a righteous cause will make a lasting impression.
