Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Life's Ripples header

March in Indiana is always an interesting time. Being a basketball state, we've had our share of drama with I.U. looking for a new coach, and high school basketball players looking good enough to be in the professional arena.
The weather has also played its part by providing us with a snow storm on the first day of Spring. Those of us who have lived in Indiana a long time just shrug it off with the attitude of "that's Indiana weather, wait a day or two and it'll be totally different". Actually, weather is fairly unpredictable no matter where one lives. I lived in Montana for three years. One December we received twenty three inches of snow on a Wednesday with temperatures hovering around negative fifty degrees and a wind chill factor of negative seventy. Those kind of weather conditions sound pretty miserable to most of us. However, by Friday of the same week the temperature was above fifty and there was not a spot of snow to be seen anywhere.
In Indiana, we spend a lot of time and energy "discussing" basketball and weather. The reality is that in both cases, as well as many other areas of our lives, we are totally helpless as to the outcomes. So what do we do when our lives feel out of control?
It has been proven over the years that taking care of our bodies promotes good mental health. One way we can take care of ourselves is to eat right and exercise. Paul says that our bodies are a temple, and one way of honoring God is taking care of that temple.
Another way to take care of ourselves is to fill our minds with good information which helps us to be creative and positive people. Reading good books that expand our horizons, studying scripture, and meditating on God's word will lead to emotional health and spiritual well being.
Our lives are a gift from God, and it is our task to take care of that gift. So control the few things in life that are controllable, but in all those other areas "let go and let God".
Peace awaits for those who truly seek it.
