Insurance in the Big Red House
by Alan Hague
posted: Mar. 10, 2006

You can't miss the big red house in the 6100 block of College Avenue. Elizabeth Ricke bought the old house in 2005 and converted it into her office. She retained the historic feel of the structure with its hardwood floors and extensive woodwork. As the Broad Ripple historian, I asked for the full tour. Elizabeth showed me the full basement, the first and second floors, and even the neat attic. While discussing the history of the house, Elizabeth mentioned that she had the original abstract for the property. She loaned it to me so I can scan it to add it to our history of the area.

Elizabeth interviewed to become a State Farm agent when she heard that the Broad Ripple district was available. "This was the whole reason that I decided to interview with State Farm," she explained, "because I knew that this was the neighborhood that I was passionate about. I didn't want to be just anywhere in Indianapolis, I wanted to be part of a community. I grew up in a small town in southern Indiana. To me, Broad Ripple is as close as you can get to a small-town feel, and it is in the middle of Indianapolis, which is really cool!"
Elizabeth comes from a State Farm family. Her mother has been the State Farm agent in Greensburg for 13 years, her sister Emily, also a Broad Ripple resident, is on the State Farm catastrophe claim team and is still in New Orleans.
"What we find is that people don't realize how much State Farm agents do," explained Elizabeth. "It's not just auto, home, and life insurance anymore." Services offered include life insurance and annuities to help people with their financial/estate planning, health insurance, supplements like Medicare supplements and disability insurance. Elizabeth also offers individual health plans, like major medical plans for people who are self-employed, or short-term health insurance for people who are between jobs. "We do small business planning - we have competitive worker's comp insurance and small business insurance. We can help small business owners with life insurance planning. What happens if one partner passes away? What happens to the business? We help people save and plan for college and for retirement with Roth IRAs and mutual funds. Roth IRAs are popular right now because people can contribute until April 15 for last year. They can even use last year's refund check to fund last year's Roth IRA contribution. We can help our clients with 401K rollovers and we also have very competitive rates for CDs."
Of course, Elizabeth offers the auto, home, and fire insurance that State Farm is known for. One aspect of State Farm of which some may not be aware is the State Farm Bank. It is a full savings and thrift bank with online checking and savings account access. Deposits can be mailed in or deposited in several ATMs around town. Aside from not having a teller to go to, Elizabeth explained that it is just like any other bank. Auto loans and mortgages are available, too. "The nice thing about State Farm Bank is that we don't sell our loans to third parties. So, when you get a loan through State Farm Bank, you know that State Farm Bank is going to be the one servicing that loan throughout the life of the loan."
In addition to Elizabeth, there are three representatives in the office. Magda Frank Parrish handles the bank and commercial accounts, Nickie Powers takes care of the personal insurance and auto/home policies, and Chris Folliard does life and health insurance.
Take a few minutes and drop in to see Elizabeth. She will help you plan for the future and can give you a tour of the neat old house.
