12 local high school girls have been selected to attend the 2005 Hoosier Girls State this summer at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. The cost of the 12 trips is covered by the fund raising efforts led by Shirley Rainey, chairman of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #34 Hoosier Girls State committee. "I went over budget this year," said Shirley, "but we're working very hard to generate more tax-deductible donations. Our goal is to give every girl possible this unique opportunity to further her leadership potential in Americanism, her understanding of our system of government, and her dedication to patriotism and freedom." Shirley noted that there is a question on both the West Point, Naval Academy and the Air Force academy entrance applications asking "Did you attend either boys state or girls state."

This year's delegates from Cathedral are: Caitlin Rogozinski, Barbara Arthur, Kellie Conrad, Jennie Hoffman, Emily MacGill, Katie Meyer, Bridget Sullivan, Maggie Gentry, Ali Burger, and Sarah Crawford. The delegate from Chatard is Catherine Kline. The home schooled delegate is Emily Zender. The Gazette hopes that one of the delegates will record her experiences in words and pictures at the event and write an article for us.
