Gallery Tour Showcased Artists: Part Two - by Candance Lasco

With one eye on the sky, we walked down the Avenue. Although heavy rain and lightning were imminent, that did not deter the spirit of the people we passed.
Our first stop was at the corner of Broad Ripple Avenue and Westfield. Striking treatments of grapes, apples and melons are not just the domain of chefs. At Sigman's Gallery, still life painter Kathleen McMurray exhibited and conversed with the crowd. Pumpkin Still Life stood out on the back wall. Apples fresh from the tree shared the canvas with a blue and white Chinese vase. The humble turnip took center stage in oil. I noticed a fellow in a shirt printed with blue ovals by the pumpkins and snapped a shot.

We continued around the block and found a serious group mulling over the fine selection at Big Hat Books. My husband gravitated to the science section and found some unique offerings. Later in the evening, writers read from selected works. We vowed to spend a lazy morning there adding to our home library
Next door The Bungalow is billed as a lifestyle gallery that features furniture, art and decorative accessories. Whether you want a unique vase for that lone rose from your garden or a 50s style lamp, check out this shop. While I studied Terry Border's mixed media Self Portrait, I noticed the shirt of blue ovals again.
Our next stop was Turandot. A group of women were clustered around a table discussing the featured book, Skirting the Issue, Stories of Indiana's Historical Women Artists. Authors, Judy Newton and Carol Weiss, were on hand to autograph and talk about the talented Hoosier women who are featured in the book.

The promised rain was holding off as we headed to Artifacts. The center of attention there was a zany young artist, Lydia V. Gerbig-Fast. She has received several grants to create her one of kind gold, silver and enamel jewelry. When I asked her to remove a piece from the case, the women around me loudly voted for the tiara. The leaves on the tiara were so lightly formed it was hard to imagine that the foliage was made of precious metal. The women had a great time trying on the tiara. For a moment, each was transformed into Cinderella at the ball. The guy in the shirt of blue ovals smiled when he saw us.

Wearable art is what I found at Marigold Contemporary Clothing. Deciding there was nothing to fit him, my husband went outside to people watch. Artist Lisa Moos showed her scarves and explained her work. These hand knits were wonderfully textured and colored. A pair wearing red hats came into the shop. Their broad smiles showed the gallery tour was a hit for them.
I retrieved my husband and as we turned to resume our tour, we saw Linda Shikany of Marigold talking with my hardworking editor Alan and his wife, Elizabeth, who had been touring north of the canal. I reported my progress and snapped a few photos of the elusive editor [I shall remain elusive -Alan]. Next we visited one of the newest galleries in Broad Ripple, Cannon Gallery at 6356 North Guilford, features musically themed art including authentic instruments whimsically painted. We admired several pieces and after a lively conversation with owner Jeri Cannon, we went in search of dinner.
We finished our evening at Union Jack Pub. A group was celebrating someone's 21st birthday. Many customers were cheering the Pacers on as Reggie once again came through for the team. As we enjoyed our meal, my husband told me that the fellow wearing the blue oval print shirt was John. (They had apparently conversed while I was working.) We heard the rain pattering on the roof. We didn't even care that we would get soaked walking back to the car. We'd had a great evening. You can't beat the Spring Gallery Tour and good food in Village.
