"Gazelle" Edition of Newspaper Was Our April Fool Offering

The April 1, 2005, edition of the Broad Ripple Gazette (volume 2 issue 7) included, free of charge, a special four-page joke paper titled The Broad Ripple Gazelle. The shocking cover story of the Gazelle was the arrival of Le Bank on the site of the Vogue nightclub. We want to assure our readers that there is no Le Bank and that the Vogue will remain as a landmark in Broad Ripple.
We mention this because we heard that several residents only read the front page, and thus never made it to the April Fool announcement in the back. We received several calls from readers. Messages ranged from "You got me good, but don't ever do that again!" to "Where do they think they are going to put the drive-through lanes?"
The April Fool issue was born when we found some silly old photos last summer. We thought it would be funny to print them as current event pictures with goofy captions. When April arrived, we decided to not sully the reputation of the Broad Ripple Gazette with silly photos, hence the birth of the Gazelle. Being a separate paper, it needed a front page story. What would get people going? First I thought of tearing down the north side of the avenue to build a huge casino. One of my columnists thought that the joke needed to be more personal. She suggested something more believable than a casino. A bank seemed perfect. Now, where to put it? How about we tear down a landmark, like the Vogue? I cleared the joke through the affected parties, and tried to make the story silly - silly quotes, silly bank name, silly hours, silly photo credit, so it would be obvious that it was a joke. The feedback has been great and I hope everyone enjoyed it.
