posted: Apr. 01, 2005

2005 Prisoner's Walk Begins April 9, 2005
When: April 9th - May 28th, 2005
Where: From Indianapolis, Indiana to Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin
Distance: 700 miles
How: Walking
Why: Why not?

This spring, poet/educator, Joseph Foster, is hoping to raise awareness and donations for "Poetry in the Prisons", a grass roots educational program that encourages "poetry as therapy" to the incarcerated in Indiana State Prisons. For forty days he is walking over 700 miles alone, following the Monon RailTrail north from downtown Indianapolis to a network of ghost and active railroads that lead all the way to the northwest corner of Wisconsin. As in the past, Joseph will be carrying all necessary provisions including tent, sleeping bag and notebook.
If you or a friend are able to donate any amount, please make checks payable to "IPJC, Poetry in the Prisons" and mail to:
Poetry in the Prisons
Attn: Joseph Foster
6166 N Carrollton Ave
Indpls, IN 46220

The Route: Joseph will walk through or near the following towns and cities: Indiana: Indianapolis, Noblesville, Tipton, Kokomo, Peru, Rochester, Plymouth, La Porte, Portage, Hobart, Merrillville, Munster and Hammond. Illinois: North Chicago, Waukegan and Zion. Wisconsin: Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Madison, La Crosse, Eau Claire, St. Croix Falls, Superior and Lake Nebagamon. Note: The CTA will provide rail transportation from Hammond through Chicago.

If you or a friend would like to join Joseph Foster on the first day of The Prisoner's Walk for the first 5-10 miles on Saturday morning, April 9th in Indianapolis, please email poetryintheprisons@yahoo.com
