Poetic Thoughts - Sorrow for a Dying Sparrow - by C.W. Pruitt II
posted: Apr. 01, 2005

Poetic Thoughts header

Jan Keske Martinez is an Indiana artist whose poems have been published nationally and internationally. Jan and I co-author inspirational poetry booklets. Here is one of her poems from our booklet Mystic Notations.

Sorrow for a Dying Sparrow

It came in from the snow and ice
because it wanted to keep singing.

It entered through a tiny hole
coming down from the roof
to the warm living room. It sang.

It is said that sparrows
cannot sing in winter, but
I know this is not true.

It sang a day
then stiffened its wings
to close its eyes forever.

A sparrow sang to me in winter
for life must pass on its heart
before it can earn its dignity.
