Let Nature Take Care of the Ducks
Looking along the canal can test your duck identifying skills. The most common ducks you will see are Canada Geese, mallards, and sometimes a mix of domestic ducks. At rare times you might be able to see ducks that usually float on White River like Northern pintails or wood ducks.
Area residents can help manage the canal residents. (You know we get our drinking water from the canal.) As usual I tout the message, "DON'T FEED THE DUCKS".
Instead, the best way to support the ducks is to participate in the Rubber Duck Race. This annual event supports the Broad Ripple Village Association and attracts thousands of participants. So, humans enjoy watching the ducks in our meandering canal and river but don't feed them and definitely don't dump pet ducks in our area waters.
