Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes #265
posted: Nov. 05, 2026

This historic serial has run on and off in the last 22 years of the Broad Ripple Gazette. The intention is to share the history of Broad Ripple, help people find their ancestors in the text, and to complete the transcriptions of these important early documents.
The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from the original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I have transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections to the text in brackets [ ]. I will try to include street name changes, such as: Shelby Street became 63rd, then Broad Ripple Avenue, Morgan Street is now Guilford, North is now 64th, Hancock is now Westfield, Light Ave is College. See more of our street name research at BroadRippleHistory.org - Alan
The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

Adjourned Meeting August 18 - 1911

The Board of Trustees of Broad Ripple met in special session August - 18 - 1911 all members being present.

Purpose of meeting was to further consider the water works franchise presented by Jesse T. Moorman and The Indianapolis Water Company.

A resolution was introduced and passed on 1st and 2nd reading providing for the granting of a franchise to and to make a contract with some reliable and competent person, firm, company or corporation to erect maintain and operate pumps and water works, filter plants and wells or other necessary devices, and to lay mains, conduits and erect and maintain all other necessary things for the purpose of furnishing to the Town of Broad ripple, Marion County, Indiana and its citizens, good wholesome and potable water for domestic and commercial use and for the extinguishing of fires and declaring an emergency.

Resolution was passed upon 1st and 2nd reading.

In order to have passed the resolutions 3rd reading, and enabled the Board to consider either or both of the Water Work's franchises before them, they would have had to suspend the rules. A vote on doing such resulted in a unanimous decision to pass the resolution, (and consequently the franchises) over until the next regular meeting night.

The Board then stood adjourned

Fletcher Johnson
Town Clerk
