Indy DPW announces 2026 leaf season collection dates
posted: Nov. 05, 2026
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) announced this year's leaf collection will run from Monday, Nov. 9, to Friday, Dec. 4.
Starting Nov. 9, residents can leave up to 40 plastic bags of leaves for pickup each week. They will be picked up on their regularly scheduled collection day for no additional cost. While crews will collect leaves and trash at different times, residents are asked to leave bags of leaves three to five feet away from their regular trash cart for easy pickup.
During the week of Thanksgiving, trash and leaf collections will follow a slide schedule on Thursday and Friday (Thanksgiving and the day after). This is the only planned slide schedule during the four-week window.
Outside of the collection season, bags of leaves must be placed inside regular trash carts for disposal. Bags placed outside of the bins will not be collected. In the event a route is missed during leaf collection, residents should follow the same procedure as missed trash pick-up and open a service request via
Request Indy or call the Mayor's Action Center at (317) 327-4622.
When raking leaves, Indy DPW advises residents to clear leaves from storm drain inlets to prevent potential drainage and flooding problems. Leaves should not be raked into roadways; this will cause issues with DPW Operations' street sweepers. Residents should also remember that burning leaves is illegal in Marion County, as it releases harmful particles into the air.
Community partners, such as GreenCycle, allow residents to drop off leaves to turn into compost. These partners may charge a fee. The leaves collected by Indy DPW during the four-week collection season will be taken to
South Side Landfill and turned into compost. That compost is not available to residents.
