Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes #262

This historic serial has run on and off in the last 22 years of the Broad Ripple Gazette. The intention is to share the history of Broad Ripple, help people find their ancestors in the text, and to complete the transcriptions of these important early documents.
The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from the original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I have transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections to the text in brackets [ ]. I will try to include street name changes, such as: Shelby Street became 63rd, then Broad Ripple Avenue, Morgan Street is now Guilford, North is now 64th, Hancock is now Westfield, Light Ave is College. Resolution #5 for more sidewalks
All members being present.
Meeting was called pursuant to the notices for the hearing of objections to method of sidewalk construction on Ashland Ave., Coil St., Jackson St., Hamilton St., Canal Ave., and Shelby Street according to the places, profiles and specifications in the office of the Town Clerk of the Town of Broad Ripple.
No objections were presented to the floor for said improvements on the various streets
Improvement Resolution #5 of 1911 was introduced providing for the improvement of Canal Ave. from College Ave. to Central Ave, in the town of Broad Ripple, Marion County, Indiana, by constructing concrete sidewalk and curb on South side of the street, sidewalk to be 5 ft wide. Curb on north side of street.
Resolution was passed on 1st and 2nd readings and an emergency declared making the same in full force and effect from and after its passage.
Discussion was entered into regarding construction of sidewalk and curb on South side of Canal Ave. from Morgan St. to College Ave., relating to exact location owing to the narrowness of street. It was determined that the Board should see the individual property owners, and endeavor to secure an additional 5 feet from abutting property so as to make the roadway a width of 27 feet.
The clerk read the specifications providing for the sidewalk and curb construction on above mentioned streets, by which all builders should be governed by and abide by as contractor or contractors.
No further business coming before the board. They stood adjourned.

The Board of Trustees met in special session April 22, 1911.
All members being present.
For the purpose of receiving bids for sidewalk and curb construction, and grading of roadways for improvements on Ashland Ave., Coil St., Jackson St., Hamilton St., Canal Ave., and Shelby Street, according to plans [etc?] in the office of the Town Clerk. Bids were received from JA Hardin + Co, Pendleton, Ind. - Elias (?) J. Jeffries, Greenfield, Ind, and Albert White, Greenfield, Ind. Bids were read and bidders were informed that at a later date to be decided upon, the board would give its decision as to the acceptance or rejection of the said bids.
Board stood adjourned.
