Random Rippling - Brewpub gets Cask Marque certification

Broad Ripple Brewpub, 840 E. 65th Street [C5 on
map], has earned Cask Marque certification. Only a handful of pubs in the US serve cask ales. I talked to Billy Hannan, co-owner of the Brewpub, and brewer Jonathon Mullens about this distinction.
Cask ales are an old style of beer with more natural carbonation and is served at a warmer temperature. There are two large wooden handles behind the bar for the cask ales. Those handles help create a suction to pull the beer out and a sparkler head helps aerate the beer as the glass is filling to create a head of foam.
Steve Hamburg, USA Director and Assessor from
Cask Marque, came to the Brewpub to measure all aspects of its cask ales. This included temperature, color and how the foam behaved in the glass as the beer was consumed. After the Brewpub was certified a plaque was mounted by the entrance. There is a Cask Finder app to help locate places around there world that are certified. (I tried the app and it was difficult to navigate. You have to zoom way in to a region to see if there are any certified places there.)
Next time you are at the Broad Ripple Brewpub, celebrate with a glass of the ESB, one of its cask ales.
