Query Corner - Marker update
posted: Jul. 31, 2025
In the May 29 issue we published the following Query Corner:
Do any readers know the origins of the marker on the northwest corner of Kessler Boulevard and Rural Street?
It reads "IN MEMORIAM. This plaque is dedicated to the memory of the early settlers of Broad Ripple Village. December 15, 1994".
If you have any info, please contact us at

We received a reply from a reader:
If I remember correctly, when the medical office building was built, there was concern that the site had been a pioneer cemetery. I believe it had been a green space, no buildings. Therefore, some controversy about the office building being built there. I don't know who put the plaque there, but I believe it's to memorialize the pioneer cemetery.

That prompted me to do more research into the long-gone local cemeteries. Theresa is correct. I found descriptions of Dawson and Culbertson cemeteries on that northwest corner of Rural and Kessler.
I have now added a
Cemeteries section to the BroadRippleHistory.org website.
