Swallows and Swifts
The bird world can be confusing because we often observe birds quickly and in silhouette. It has been my ability to name birds just as "little brown bird". So this year let's explore some commonly confused birds, and see if we can get a bit better at our identification. By the way, most of these species can be seen in our area.
Let's see the difference between swallows and swifts: Barn Swallow, Cliff Swallow vs. Common Swift and Chimney Swift. Key differences of behavior, ecology and anatomy set them apart:
Swallows | Swifts |
• Slender body with forked tail | • Stockier body with square or notched tail |
• Long, pointed wings | • Shorter, stiff, curved wings |
• Graceful, agile flight often close to the ground | • Fast, high-altitude flight, continuous wingbeats |
• Food: Insects caught near ground/water | • Food: Insects caught at high altitudes |
• Mud nests in sheltered locations | • Stick nests in vertical areas |
• Flock migration to warmer regions | • Long-distance migration, often in large groups |
• Nest in colonies, less gregarious | • Highly social, large flocking behavior |
• Call: Soft twittering | • Call: High-pitched chattering calls |
