Ponds and Water Magnets
Birds need water. That is why if you are trying to make a wonderful wildlife habitat in your yard you will need to offer water: a bird bath, fountain, or pond. But if you are lucky enough to be on a body of water, you are in for some wonderful bird and duck watching. I love spotting the Great Blue Heron. This bird is easily seen flying overhead after you learn the silhouette of the body. The head is tucked in, large body, and long feet behind looking like an odd flying object. Every time I see a Blue Heron when I'm driving, I have to comment.

Most of the time Blue Herons are spotted stand on one thin legs in the water just waiting to dive for a fish. Their nesting site can often be in flocks resting high up in trees and called Heron Rookeries. They do not feed at feeders but will enjoy your Koi pond if it is not protected. They are the local bird fishermen but also eat amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, and even birds.
