Random Historic Photo - Will Coil and Ham Thompson
posted: May 23, 2024

This photo of Will Coil and Hamlin Thompson is from around 1875. This is based on how old they look, they were born in 1855 and 1856.
Ham Thompson, your editor's great-great-great uncle, married Will's sister Sarah. In the 1930s Ham and Sarah lived at 6116 Bellefontaine (pronounced BELL FOUNTAIN, now Guilford) Avenue.
Will Coil is the grandson of Jacob Coil. In 1836, Jacob bought the land that is now Broad Ripple and drew the first plat map in 1837, then died.
As a side note, William Jacob Coil (pictured below) is the son of Jacob C Coil, who we think is the man pictured in the
history booklet and mis-identified as Jacob Coil, Broad Ripple founder. Sharon Butsch Freeland surmised that Jacob died before photography was used in the US, so that picture must be of his son, Jacob C. Coil.
