Random Historic Photo - Coil Family
posted: Jan. 11, 2024

This is a Coil family portrait. It show Jacob C. Coil and three of his four children, Mary, Clayton and Sarah. Based on the apparent ages of the children I would guess this was taken around 1900.
Jacob C. was the son of the Jacob Coil that platted the original Broad Ripple area in 1837.
His daughter Mary married Volney Dawson (your editor's great-great-great-uncle). Volney's grandfathers were Elijah Dawson and John Johnson (his land included what is now the fairgrounds and a replica of his cabin in in the Pioneer Village there).
His daughter Sarah married Hamlin Thompson (also your editor's great-great-great-uncle) and they lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue.
There is a mystery with a
photo of "Jacob Coil" in the
Broad Ripple High School History of Broad Ripple booklet. Local historian Sharon Butsch Freeland realized that Jacob Coil, original platter of Broad Ripple, died in 1837, years before photography was readily available. Perhaps the photo is actually of Jacob Conrad Coil.
