ICO to present free concerts
posted: Sept. 07, 2023

Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (ICO) is thrilled to return to the glorious outdoors in collaboration with Indy Parks and support from the National Bank of Indianapolis and Penrod Society. ICO will present free concerts to the community on 9/6 at Garfield Park, 9/7 at Riverside Park, and 9/8 at Holliday Park, all highlighting community partners!
On Thursday, September 7th (8 PM), at Riverside Park's Taggart Amphitheatre, ICO will perform with the bilingual choir from Global Prep Academy (IPS 44, in the Riverside Elementary Building). ICO has been working with the choir in preparation for their performance of "Oye," a bilingual song arranged for orchestra by the Link-Up Carnegie Hall program. Many of the musical pieces chosen for this concert celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the seven Spanish speaking countries celebrating their independence in September. A feature unique to the Riverside performance will be Fuego Nuevo's Ballet Folkórico Dancers performing a Jalisco dance to El Tirador. ICO will preview an excerpt from Ellington's The River with Kenyetta Dance Co. The full collaboration with Kenyetta Dance will happen in April 2024 with Joshua Thompson and the ICO (Black Keys: The Evolution of the Black Classical Arts).
The following evening, Friday, September 8th (7 PM), Indianapolis audiences can catch a free performance at Holliday Park. Friday's concert includes a "Yoga Break" with Invoke Yoga during which ICO will play the slow movement from Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" while Invoke Yoga leads audiences in simple relaxing poses. This concert marks the 9th consecutive year that ICO has played at Holliday Park with the support of the Friends of Holliday Park Foundation. Audiences can expect light and fun classical favorites expertly paired with lovely park views. Returning this evening are Global Prep Academy bilingual choir students and violin/cello students from the Indianapolis Suzuki Academy with a side-by-side performance with the ICO. Free reservations can be made online at icomusic.org HERE and are helpful in communicating any weather-related changes. Weather updates can also be found on ICO social media, website or by calling 317-940-9607.
