Before And After The Crash
On Christmas Day 1984 Ball State Freshman John Lorton was involved in a car accident that would forever change things for him. He spent five months in a coma and required brain surgery. To this day, one side of his body remains weak and his speech is impaired. He has had years of physical rehabilitation.
His mind, however, is razor sharp. The 2 poems below were composed by John before and after the crash. The first is a tribute to his friend Jonathan who was hit by several cars and died while walking in the street. The second poem is a tribute to Barb, who helped John during his early rehabilitation.
BEFORE
Bloodstains scar the pavement
So tragic, yet too true
There was nothing I could do
Even though you were really wild
No one deserves to die a child
Even now it causes me pain
Stain upon stain
Till next we meet
GOODBYE JONATHAN
AFTER
Of all the wonders I have known
Foremost is the kindness shown
To myself and others on this sinking boat
Who must daily fight to keep their dreams afloat
You are proof life can be good
Since you remove this shamefilled hood
Those of us must wear without choice
Knowing most will ignore our voice
THANK YOU BARB
