Query Corner - Light's Sugar Grove
posted: Jan. 12, 2023
Has anyone heard of Light's Sugar Grove? "Light's" Sugar Grove addition "Second Section" (as it is written in the town minutes below) was annexed by the Town of Broad Ripple in 1905. I have read that Dr. Mason B. Light was a prominent physician and also an inventor in Broad Ripple (further research is required to understand who Dr. Mason B. Light, Dr. Cal Light, and Dr. R.C. Light were in Broad Ripple, but I understand that James Light was father to R.C. who was father to Mason.). I would guess that Light Avenue (College Avenue today) was named for Dr. R.C. Light, probably the father of Mason Light. There was also a Light Street that is Coil today.
There is another addition in Broad Ripple area known as Light's Bellevue. I think it was near 56th and College Avenue.
If you have any info on the naming of Light's Sugar Grove and Bellevue or other BR subdivisions, please contact us at
