City Stresses Responsible Open Burning
posted: Oct. 27, 2022

Residents are reminded to prioritize public health and safety this fall as they consider the different ways to get rid of their combustible items.
The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (BNS) is encouraging residents to consider alternative disposal methods for their yard waste and other refuse this year. Open burning is limited within Marion County, as it can cause health and environmental risks.
Residents should first consider recycling, composting, or using solid waste disposal services to get rid of their leaves, grass clippings, stumps, household garbage, trash, land-clearing debris, dead animals, tires, asbestos materials, wire, waste lumber, hazardous materials, furniture, and mattresses.
The Department of Public Works will collect Marion County residents' leaves from November 7 through December 2. For more information, visit indy.gov/activity/leaf-collection-season.
Open burning should be considered a last resort. Dried branches, limbs and twigs from the property may be burned ONLY if a resident:
  • Uses a non-combustible container with a ventilated mesh covering with openings no greater than ¼-inch
  • Places the container at least 15 feet from any structure, trees or other flammable object
  • Maintains a means to extinguish the fire at all times
  • Burns between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Attends to the fire at all times
  • Prevents nuisance activity, such as smoke and odor
Other permitted types of open burning include ceremonial bonfires conducted by established groups (schools, churches or other recognized organizations); campfires, patio fire pits or chiminea; cooking fires, such as barbecue grills; and personal comfort fires.
For more information, visit indy.gov/activity/open-burning. Violations may be reported to the Mayor's Action Center through the RequestIndy app or by dialing 317-327-4622 (4-MAC).
