Random Rippling - Mayor breaks ground on BR Avenue
posted: Mar. 31, 2022

Mayor Joe Hogsett joined the Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) to break ground on improvements coming to Broad Ripple Avenue. In a joint partnership between the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) and the City through the Indianapolis Neighborhood Infrastructure Partnership (INIP), $6.73M will fund improvements from College to Primrose avenues, including a new "River Walk" that will connect Broad Ripple Park to the Monon Trail.
This extensive project will bring new large-diameter storm pipes, manholes, and curb inlets along the Broad Ripple Avenue corridor, alleviating longstanding drainage issues for area businesses. Indy DPW also plans to make stormwater improvements to adjacent infrastructure at Carrollton, Guilford, and Winthrop avenues in order to reduce flooding concerns in the surrounding neighborhood.
"The announcement of these upgrades is long-awaited good news for area business owners and homeowners," said Mayor Joe Hogsett. "As we know, with enhanced infrastructure comes construction. I urge residents to continue patronizing Broad Ripple restaurants and businesses throughout the coming months, while remaining patient during temporary road closures that will bring long-lasting improvements."
This project will bring much needed improvements to the area including:
  • 2,500 linear feet of sidewalk rehabilitation
  • 2.9 lane miles of asphalt street rehabilitation
  • 2,400 linear feet of new trail, named by the BRVA as the "River Walk"
Citizen's Energy Group will begin utility work which will include rolling lane closures expected to last approximately four months. Following the conclusion of utility relocations, the construction phase will begin, starting with the stormwater sewer trunk line along Broad Ripple Avenue.
Indy DPW and its contractor, Reith-Riley Construction, will continue to work with individual property managers as well as building owners to identify individual delivery schedules and accessibility needs during peak business times.
DPW encourages drivers and pedestrians visiting Broad Ripple during the next several months to proceed with caution, follow posted detours and give construction crews the space they need.
