Warfleigh Public Meeting
by Alan Hague
posted: Oct. 14, 2021

The Warfleigh Neighborhood Association (WNA) held its annual public meeting virtually via Zoom on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. There were around 25 in attendance. WNA president Steve Brinning introduced the current board of directors.

Warfleigh Public Meeting

Michael Massonne spoke on the floodwall project status. The Army Corps of Engineers announced that the passive floodwall testing, recently conducted near Capital Avenue, passed. Work continues on the approach at the east 52nd Street bridge. The contractor will add reinforcement to the flood wall panels at this location near Rocky Ripple. The goal is to have that completed by the end of 2021. Massonne thinks the earliest FEMA could give the final approvals to the project, allowing for flood map revisions, would be late 2022.
Natalie van Dongen, Mayor's Neighborhood Advocate - Area 1, spoke next on the monthly newsletter. Residents can find Natalie's info here. She announced the new program to feature local artists. indykeepscreating.org.
Steve updated some projects - the Kessler White River bridge is scheduled to be complete late 2022 and the Westfield Boulevard bridge over the canal (between the Bungalow and River House [F5 on map]) is scheduled for a rebuild in 2023.
Shannon Norman, principal planner at the Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD), discussed the transit-oriented overlay district changes coming November 2021. The project reviews the zoning of commercial and mixed-use properties to align closely with the Red Line Indygo service in the area. The rezoning encourages pedestrian-accessible uses in proximity of the bus line, limiting uses such as gas stations, parking lots, etc.
Next was the annual board of directors election voting.
Lynn Levy then explained the history of the WNA organization and the future of it that is being called Warfleigh 3.0. The goal is for expanded organization to allow the association to be proactive in its handling of neighborhood issues and to secure the finances needed to accomplish future projects.
The meeting was adjourned and the election results were posted on the WNA website. "Results from the WNA 2021 Board of Directors Election: All candidates were elected by a majority vote this evening by those in attendance. Welcome to new members Chuck Flynn, Sara White Freeman, Griff Griffiths, Jim Polito, and Randy Wasmuth. And welcome back to returning WNA Board members Steve Brining, Lynn Dimond, Lynn Levy, Laura Rogers, and Tammy Sajdyk."
