White River State Park Begins Phase 3 of Amphitheater Construction Permanent Canopy to be Installed to Complete Project
posted: Oct. 22, 2020
White River State Park (WRSP) has begun construction on Phase 3 of the new Amphitheater at White River State Park.
This third phase will feature installation of an iconic permanent canopy to complete the newly constructed Amphitheater at White River State Park. The Amphitheater project, which broke ground in 2018, consists of a permanent stage and lighting, permanent seating and seating pad for 2,740 persons with an additional lawn seating capacity of 4,000. It also includes permanent restrooms and artist amenities. This third and final phase is made possible through a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.
These enhancements will allow the park to expand its community reach by offering the venue to non-profit, civic, and educational organizations for various activities including press announcements, graduations, and performances. It will also allow for broader attraction of a more diverse range of acts and artists for all to enjoy.
"The new permanent venue with an iconic canopy will be a pronounced enhancement to the west side of downtown Indy," said Carolene Mays-Medley, executive director of the White River State Park Development Commission. "The canopy will have an artistic value while providing a weather barrier for our guests. In addition to building an outstanding project that includes arts, lights, and functionality, the canopy also accomplishes a greater community good by providing an uplift to our community and the economy in these unfortunate times."
In addition to completing a state-of-the-art venue, the White River State Park Development Commission will provide a local economic boost by utilizing Indiana-based construction and design teams. The project was designed by Axis Architecture and is being managed by Shiel Sexton and Powers & Sons. It is slated to be completed in mid-June 2021.
