Random Historic Photo - Alpha Cafe
posted: Jun. 04, 2020

These photos were sent to us by Fred Stark (BRHS Class of 1965). Fred's grandfather, Orliff Remy (the 1940 city directory lists him as Orlif W Remy), owned the Alpha Cafe located at was is today 823 Broad Ripple Avenue, but back in 1939 was 813 E. 63rd Street. In 2020 Youmi Crepes and Bubble Tea is at the 823 address [G4 on
map].
Fred's description of the Alpha Cafe, "My grandfather's restaurant, the ALPHA CAFE was (according to my mom) the first ever restaurant in Broad Ripple....hence the name "Alpha". His name was Orliff Waldo Remy, "Waldo", and my grandmother's name was Sarah Adeline Remy, "Addie". These photos were taken in 1939. Note the window sign, "Chicken Dinners, 50 cents"! Also note the "Robert's Milk" sign....an old Indianapolis dairy at that time. In those days my parents, Harold and Betty (Remy) Stark worked downtown and would often come up to Broad Ripple to the Alpha Cafe for dinner before I was born. My mother told me that her mom, Addie Remy would sometimes have to sub for the cook at the cafe if he didn't show up. She hated it! :-)"
