INDY DPW Begins Re-introducing Suspended Services
posted: May 07, 2020
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) will begin re-introducing the Heavy Trash collection program on May 4 and the ToxDrop program on May 9. Both programs were suspended for the month of April as Indy DPW and partners assessed the safety of these operations in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
Increased precautions and special considerations for social distancing guidelines will be in place to protect employees and residents.
As heavy trash collection begins in May, households will still only be allotted two heavy trash items per month. If residents have more than two heavy trash items they need to discard, they can continue to drop off items at the Citizens Transfer Station.
Due to the suspension, more homes are expected to have heavy trash items to service, and therefore patience is encouraged, even if a resident's heavy trash day is missed in a given week. Indy DPW's solid waste division will be working hard to service all homes in their respective week.
Resuming its standard schedule on May 9, residents can drop off eligible ToxDrop items at the regular second Saturday location, Perry Township Government Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
As the ToxDrop program re-opens, all residents will be asked to stay in their vehicles to assist with social distancing as workers accept materials for collection. Event staff will be screened for symptoms before arriving to the event and will be required to use a face mask and nitrile gloves at all times while on site. If items must be handed directly from a resident to worker, staff will ensure that residents are wearing both a face mask and gloves before accepting the materials.
