Public Notices - Indianapolis Art Center Announces Winner Of The 2020 Skip Mckinney Fellowship Award
posted: Nov. 01, 2019

The McKinney Family Foundation, chaired by Robert H. McKinney, has named Elise Howell the Indianapolis Art Center's ninth Skip McKinney Faculty Award Fellow. The $20,000 fellowship is given to the Art Center faculty member who exhibits excellence in teaching art and building community.
An elated and surprised Howell gratefully accepted the award noting, "The Art Center has been such an important part of my life...and this means so much to get this award...it is really something." Howell, the Art Center's Studio Chair for the Drawing, Painting & Textiles Studios and Teaching Artist, humbly accepted this year's award with tears in her eyes and kind words for the McKinney family and the Art Center. "I have the best job," Howell exclaimed!
Howell was selected from five finalists including Art Center teaching artists Bekah Pollard, Ethan Culleton, Jedediah Johnson, and Cory Constantine. The remaining finalists will receive $1,000 each. Additionally, with this fellowship Howell has earned a solo exhibition in October 2020 comprised of art she completes throughout the coming year.
The Skip McKinney Faculty Award is made possible by the McKinney Family Foundation. It honors the legacy of Arlene "Skip" McKinney, a long-time Art Center student, accomplished artist, and established community leader. Family members Robert H. McKinney, Lisa McKinney, Marni McKinney, and Kevin McKinney, along with panelists Rob McPherson and Marta Blades interviewed all of the finalists and selected Howell.
Presenting the award to Howell was Lisa McKinney, daughter of Robert and Skip. "This is very important to the family. This place is very important to the family...You make connections. You help people heal and create," Lisa said of the Art Center and the award finalists. "The Skip McKinney Faculty Award is meant to continue the mission by providing the winner an opportunity to share their creative vision with a larger community with a solo show."
On the scope of the award, Art Center President and Executive Director Patrick Flaherty said, "This award is unprecedented. It's unlike anything that you'll find in any community art center or even university across the country." He continued, "It is exciting to witness the truly transformational effect this award has on the winner."
