Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

Happy springtime, peeps! My perennial marker of the start of the warm weather outdoor music season is Record Store Day - Saturday, April 13. I hope to see you all out and about.

The Jazz Kitchen 25th Anniversary Celebration:
Steve Allee Big Band
Saturday, March 30, 2019
5377 N. College Ave - 21+, $25-35, two shows, 7:30 & 10 pm
First of all, congratulations to David and Jami Allee for their 25th anniversary of opening the The Jazz Kitchen. They were just young newlyweds when they opened the club and had the moxie and vision to create what is now an important part of the music culture on Indianapolis.
When I worked at CATH Coffeehouse (on the site of Fresh Market) I loved being business neighbors with The Jazz Kitchen. Not only did we share a trash area - which Dave was kind enough to fence in - we shared a sidewalk and wall. Many nights I would linger by the window at the corner of 54th and College where I would press my ear against the glass to listen to the music for a few minutes.
When Dave and Jami - with a host of family and friends - were scrubbing and painting the space, they found the painting that has been above Table 21 ever since then.
The Jazz Kitchen is celebrating the milestone with a series of 25 concerts, starting with the Steve Allee Big Band. The first show is almost sold out, there are still a few lounge side tickets available. So far, there are tickets available for the second show.
Cheers to The Jazz Kitchen - here's to another twenty-five years!

Record Store Day
Saturday, April 13, 2019
all-ages, free
We are so dang lucky to have two nationally recognized independent record stores in our neighborhood. Big thanks to you all for continuing to support them. Both Indy CD & Vinyl and LUNA music are pulling out all of the stops for Record Store Day 2019.
Visit recordstoreday.com for a list of the exclusive RSD releases.

LUNA music - 5202 N. College Avenue
The Record Store Day festivities start early in the morning with delicious Taylor's Bakery Donuts for the folks waiting for the door to exclusive RSD releases at 8am. There will also be the annual sidewalk sale happening out front.
This year (starting at 10:00) 52nd Street will be closed between College and Broadway for a proper block party. I'm extra excited about this because it will make it easier for me to dart across the street to catch a snippet of the bands performing behind LUNA during my Red Key shift....wait did I say that out loud?
Rusty Redenbacher and DJ Mr. Kinetik will be hosting the festivities. The bands start at noon and the last one takes the stage at 6:00. There will be food and drinks and such for sale.
Visit LUNA's website for set times and other details.

Indy CD & Vinyl - 806 Broad Ripple Avenue
Indy CD & Vinyl is opening at 8am on Saturday and extending their party to the next day. They'll have live music on their indoor stage on Saturday and a big stage and beer garden in the alley between Ossip and Huntington Bank on Sunday.
And how cool is this? Indy CD & Vinyl is releasing their first record - by the band Stranger Attractor - on their new label and it's an official #RSD19 selection.
Visit Indy CD & Vinyl's website for the set times and other goodies.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
