e. e. cummings
When e. e. cummings was an undergraduate at Harvard, he began working feverishly at breaking the rules of language in his poetry. This is not as easy as it sounds, for syntax is sewn into our fabric at a very early age.
cummings was a great painter. So he began writing poetry as if it were a painting.
After reading e. e.'s biography, i began trying 2 b-r-e-a-k rules and be / come more experimental. I am a very bad painter. But i wrote this poem between 3 and 4 A.M. while watching a PBS program on American artists. i will not dedicate this poem to cummings. (He would probably turn over in his grave.)
