The Wine Scene: by Jill A. Ditmire

Indiana Agriculture by the Glass
I was one of two Indiana Jills who judged the Michigan Wine Competition a few weeks ago. Jill Blume is an Enology Specialist with the Indiana Wine Grape Council. She works closely with Indiana winemakers, wineries and grape growers testing and analyzing their products. We both got involved in the Indiana wine world at the same time, and have been friends and colleagues ever since. Our ride to and from Lansing gave us plenty of time to catch up on our friendship and the Indiana wine industry. She shared information on NEW wineries, how Indiana's changing climate impacts grape growth, why the state needs more wine grape growers and the pros and cons of the growing distillery business on wine sales. (www.indianawines.org)
We also talked about the Council's public outreach. One of its most successful projects is the Indiana Beer, Wine and Spirits venue at the Indiana State Fair.

I made three visits to the State Fair this year and on the last day I ducked into the Grand Hall to see the venue. What a difference a few years makes. Wine and beer was first served at the fair in 2014. The list was short and the space was small. Now people of all ages come to the Grand Hall to enjoy air conditioning, live music, comfortable seating AND areas for those over 21 to sample or purchase Indiana made alcoholic beverages. Information on the "farming" aspect of beer, wine and spirits is presented in a fun, user-friendly way. Well done IWGC.
Just before I left the grounds that night, I ran into Nora Spitznogle. We talked for a long time about the positive growth and changes at the fair. History and education remain important elements and seem to thrive when offered in non traditional forms like the Grand Hall tasting venue. Well done ISFC.
