Buzzing Around Town - by Nora Spitznogle

Buzzing Around Town

Where in the heck did the summer go? It seems like just last week I was just writing about April's Record Store Day. I did manage to make it to all 17 days of the Indiana State Fair - what fun that was!

Dopecetics Album Release Show
Friday, August 31, 2018
Melody Inn
3826 N. Illinois Street - 21+, doors 9:00 PM, $5
I can't remember when I first saw the Dopacetics, but it was at Sabbatical, so it must have been four-ish years ago. They sounded fabulous then and I'm sure they've only gotten better. The funk-rock-soul band has recorded their CD and is celebrating with an epic lineup of bands on the bill. Joining them are: The Arc of Etheline, Rooms, Blackberry Jam.
The core Dopacetics are some of Indianapolis' best musicians: David Harrison (lead vocals), Scott Hall (guitar), Poncho Hedrick (bass), G. Lamar Owens (drums), Mina Keohane (keyboards), and Mark Ortwein (wind instruments). They are often joined by other talented friends with horns and such.
If you haven't looked at the Melody Inn's website lately, scoot on over there. They have posted some swell old photographs of early days (they opened in 1935) of the Inn.

Labor Day Street Fair
Monday, September 3, 2018
The Jazz Kitchen corner
5377 N. College Avenue - all-ages, 1:00 PM, free
It's hard to believe that this will be the 23rd Labor Day Street Fair. Which means that CATH Inc. closed 14 years ago. The street fair makes me nostalgic for CATH and Northside News, The Pie Company, Atlas, the Army/Navy Store, and everyone who has worked on that corner over the years. That said, it is always a great time to catch up with neighborhood folks.
There will be food and beverages available for purchase from The Jazz Kitchen and Yats and the music starts at 1:30. I suggest bringing a lawn chair - the seating fills up quickly.
This year's lineup features:
1:30 - 3:00 -- Tucker Brothers: A powerhouse jazz quartet led by the Tucker brothers, Nick (bass) and Joel (guitar) with melodic originals laced in introspection and complexity.
3:30 - 5:00 -- Pavel and Direct Contact: Known as one of the most entertaining Latin Jazz groups in the Midwest.
5:30 - 7:00 -- Rob Dixon and Triology: Groovy jazz, with funky originals and aspects of rock, hip hop, blues, and soul.
Thanks to David Allee for starting and continuing to host the Labor Day Street Fair and to Joe Vuskovich for jumping in with both feet.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
