Buzzing Around Town

Indiana State Fair
August 3-19, 2018
Indiana State Fairgrounds
1202 E. 38th Street
all-ages, $12 at gate (check website for deals),
gates open 8 am - 9 pm (9:30 Friday and Saturday)
When I dropped off my Open Show entries to the Indiana State Fairgrounds last weekend I realized that I had the cheesiest grin on my face the whole time. I took the opportunity to drive around the grounds and it was great to see the vintage tractors start to arrive, the Big Top tent is up and the Red Barn Elephant Ear stands were in place.
Did you know that the Indiana State Fair has an app? You can create your own schedule, scope out food stands, check out the Pioneer Village music stage, see what animals are where, and find restrooms and such. I'm suddenly feeling a little obsolete....
I'm going to try to keep my not-missing-a-day of the Fair streak alive, but it's going to be touchy a few of the days - believe it or not I still have to work while the Fair is in session.
Here's a little rundown on the things I'm looking forward to.
Pioneer Village: The village is stuffed with old farm equipment, demonstrations of homestead handiwork and farm work, and wonderful folks showing how it all works. Be sure and say hello to Dick Reel and check out the bench he's making. The vintage farm machinery in action chugs off each day at 10 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm.
Indiana Arts Building: Formerly known as the Home and Family Arts Building and the Women's Building before that. This is where you'll find the Open Show exhibits - photography, baking, handicrafts, antiques, ugly lamps, fine arts, and the Wall of Queens.
4-H Exhibit Halls: Please take time to check out the hard work of 4-H'rs from around the State. The projects take over two buildings on the north-west corner of the Grounds. Small engines, cakes, sewing, woodworking, robots, food preservation, and photography.
The Tractor Tram: This is my version of a midway ride, for one thin buck you can hitch a ride around the Fairgrounds pulled by a bio-fuel powered John Deere. I've not too proud to admit to eating on the tram. Grab an ear of sweet corn and take a spin.
State Fair Parade: The parade kicks off every day at 6:30 (no parade on Tuesdays and Saturdays) and is a delightful lineup of vintage tractors, State Fair Queens, and more tractors. It's my goal every year to hitch a ride in the parade - I couldn't make it happen last year, maybe I'll get lucky this year.
I'll totally admit to being a little disappointed when I heard the theme of this year's fair, "Step Right Up," but I've come to embrace it. I'm looking forward to visiting the Indiana's Circus Heritage Exhibit. It is based on the Children's Museum circus exhibit.
There will be three shows a day under the Big Top Circus on the north side of the Fairgrounds. The tent is impressive - I can't wait to get a peek of what's under it.

SausageFest 2018
Friday, August 17, 2018 &
Saturday, August 18, 2018
Saint Thomas Aquinas Church
4600 Kenwood Ave
all-ages, free, 5:30 pm
I haven't seen the musical lineup for SausageFest yet, but trust me, it's always great. Sausage, beer, music - what more do you need? If you're looking for kids games, a teen concert, wine, and always-clever tee shirts - they've got you covered also.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
