Buzzing Around Town

It's Indiana State Fair time, it's Indiana State Fair time! I'm already plotting my food-sampling and attraction-visiting strategy. In the meantime I need to dust off my antique entries and get my recipes together for my open show entries in the Indiana Arts Building. I'm defending my Ugly Lamp first place ribbon and that is a lot of pressure. I hope to see you there!

Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam: Indiana Avenue Tribute
Tuesday, July 31, 2018
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Avenue
21+, $25, doors 5:00, show 6:00
The Uncle Dan (writer Dan Wakefield) and Sophie (saxophonist Sophie Faught) Jams are a delightful mix of music interspersed with a panel discussion, or the other way around if you'd rather. Not only do they share the history of the person or era they're covering, they tackle some hard-to-talk about social issues.
As Dan has wrote on his blog, "When I was a boy growing up in Indianapolis in the 1940s I loved listening to 'The Ink Spots' on the radio. They were a pop vocal group who became internationally famous in the 1930s and 1940s, and in 1939 their hit song If I Didn't Care sold nineteen million copies; in 1989 they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.
"I had no idea they were from Indianapolis. I had no idea that one of their original members, Jerry Daniels, once taught music at Crispus Attucks - nor did I realize the music department of that high school was as highly regarded as their Oscar Robertson team that twice won the state basketball championship.
"I knew that guitarist Wes Montgomery and trombonist J.J. Johnson were from Indianapolis, though I didn't know that they got their start on Indiana Avenue, nor did I know that Indiana Avenue had once been the seedbed and performance center of some of the great jazz musicians in this country - Indianapolis natives who were known throughout the world, though not by the white population of their hometown. Such are the fruits of segregation."
The Indiana Avenue edition of the Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam will cover music from the Avenue's glory days and musician's experiences around the Avenue. Performers and panelists include Carl Hines, piano player and band leader who played at clubs on Indiana Avenue in the last of its legendary days and drummer Kenny Phelps who was inspired by the Indiana Avenue tradition. Aleta Hodge, author of Indiana Avenue: Life and Musical Journey will be on hand to unlock the Avenue's long-hidden history.

Indiana State Fair Chevrolet Free Stage
Friday, August 3 - Sunday, August 17, 2018
1202 E. 38th Street
all-ages, free with Fair admission
There are some great acts on the Chevrolet Free Stage and I love that several Indianapolis based bands are part of the line up. The Free Stage is in the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds, in front of the 4-H exhibit halls.
Here are a few tips:
There is limited bench and bleacher seating and you can bring a blanket sit on.
You can purchase booze, beer, and wine at the bar next to the stage and there are acres of places to buy food on the Fairgrounds.
There are great restrooms in the 4-H buildings.
If you park at the Indiana School for the Deaf it is just a quick walk across 42nd Street to Free Stage.
Every Free State show I've seen has been a blast!

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
