Lively dialogue on "aquatic experience options" at BR Park Meeting
At the Master Plan community meeting at Broad Ripple Park High School on May 23, 2018, IndyParks stated that it cost them $19 per swimmer visit for the outdoor pool. In response, an Indianapolis aquatics masters' official responded that such an allegation was due to poor programming of the pool. Saying IndyParks had thrown the pool "under the bus", he urged the outdoor pool not be closed so that more people could learn to swim - something that is not possible in a "splash park" or "lazy river". Other attendees noted their children learned to swim at the BR Park pool. These themes were echoed by interviews with locals in two TV news stories. WTHR Channel 13 by Mary Milz interviewed swimmer Dave and other pool users and supporters. Here is the link : https://www.wthr.com/article/future-of-broad-ripple-pool-a-concern-as-indy-parks-unveils-parks-master-plan
Here is the channel 6 link which also covered the issue: https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/indianapolis/broad-ripple/the-future-of-the-broad-ripple-pool
I also have started a new Facebook page, "Friends of Broad Ripple Pool", for others concerned about the fate of the outdoor pool.
It's not too late to weigh in. A pop-up display, the Project Studio, on the Broad Ripple Park master plan is now in the Broad Ripple Park Family Center where you can also leave a comment as well as view the 3 scenarios developed for the Park going forward.
For more details on the BR Park Master Plan and to give feedback on this matter, go to www.broadrippleparkmasterplan.com and be sure and email them if you have a view on your vision for the Park. Their email is info@broadrippleparkmasterplan.com
And thank you to IndyParks for allowing such a robust dialogue in this very interactive master planning process. Everyone has been great although they could have been less coy about their aquatic plans.

Get out of the Ripple-Saugatuck, Douglas Fennville, and Southwest Michigan
Saugatuck is an arts village in southwest Michigan about 3 ½ hours north of Indy. First timers will want to walk to the top of the Mt. Baldhead sand dune with a great view from the top of Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River.
It's almost blueberry season and you can pick your own at Blue Star Farms (formerly Krupkas), at 2647 68th Street in nearby Fennville (www.bluestarblueberries.com). Bring plenty home. Later in the season don't miss the famous Red Haven peaches available throughout the area.
There are beaches galore. Oval Beach on Lake Michigan is great for sun bathing. Pier Cove Beach down the coast is also nice and is free. You will find it on Lakeshore Drive south of 124th Avenue. ($10). Also free is nearby County Park Beach just north of 118th Street on Lakeshore Drive. The newest beach, the Wau-Ke-Nau Nature Preserve, is just south of County Park on Lakeshore Drive south of 116th Avenue has 365 acres.
Also a must is the Saugatuck Dunes State Park, 6575 138th Avenue with 2.5 miles of beach. Holland State Park at 2215 Ottawa Beach Road in Holland is also very nice with views of the Big Red lighthouse. (State Park fee)
My all-time favorite is the Laketown Beach which is at the end of 142nd Avenue. It is also free and features a steep walk over the dunes to the beach.

Other fun stuff:
The Holland Farmers Markets on Saturdays is always good, if not just for people watching. It runs until 2 p.m. and also has food trucks.
The Fenn Valley Winery in nearby Fennville is worth the short trip. They have "Music in the Vineyards" including on June 9, 2018, and 16, 2018, from 1-4pm. (www.fennvalley.com)
Just south of Saugatuck is the charming city of South Haven. Grab a bike rental and ride the Kal Haven trail all the way to Kalamazoo. A great beach and long pier are fun.
The What Not Restaurant on the Blue Star Highway at 116th Street (2405 68th Street in Fennville) is very good and affordable. They have bands on weekends.
And don't forget to bring some blue berries and peaches home.
