Buzzing Around Town

Hello fireflies! I hope June is treating you right. I'm enjoying the front porch and the just popping out hydrangeas. I hope to see you out and about.

Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam - The Music of Cole Porter
Tuesday, June 12, 2018
The Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Avenue - 21+, doors 5, show 6 - 8, $25
I know that I mentioned this in the last issue, but this show is worth a second mention. Writer Dan Wakefield and saxophonist Sophie Faught take the audience on a creative journey with the Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam series through music and stories.
This installment will include special guest Cathy Day, an author who is currently writing a novel on the great Indiana composer, Cole Porter. Sophie and her band will perform great jazz standards with a musical nod to Cole Porter. "Uncle" Dan will do his usual masterful job of interviewing Cathy and telling stories connecting his vast experiences to many of the Hoosier greats.

Renee Dion

Indy Hostel
4903 Winthrop Ave - all-ages, 7-10 pm, free
I became charmed by Renee Dion just by poking around her social media accounts. Her incredible voice and passion sealed the deal.
The Indy Hostel is only the second stop on her first-ever tour. And as I suspect about everything in Renee's world, she doesn't do anything small - her tour is taking her out for almost five months and over 80 stops. She is touring in support of her record HAVEN. Renee's voice is huge and just melts your heart. The album is a story of her growth as woman and as an artist and her spirituality.
I hope you'll come and listen to Renee and give her a big Hoosier State welcome!

Art from the Heartland Exhibition Opening & Community BBQ
Friday, June 22, 2018
Indianapolis Art Center
820 E. 67th Street - all-ages, 6 - 9 pm, free
The Art Center will celebrate the opening of the Summer Exhibition Series with a community party - music, outdoor games, activities, and of course, BBQ.
The show features work from some of the Midwest's most innovative and prolific artists. This year's exhibition was juried by Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art's Gallery Director Mike Barclay, who selected 80 pieces out of a pool of over 650. The exhibition serves as the Art Center's survey on the state of contemporary art in the Midwest, highlighting artists from Indiana and surrounding states.
Also opening that night, an exhibit of artwork from the Indianapolis Art Center's SMART Program. The SMART program (Supportive Mentoring through ART) is a unique partnership between the Indianapolis Art Center, Starfish Initiative and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana. It is a year-long structured art program for youth between the ages of 12-18 from under-served areas of Indianapolis with an interest and/or talent in the visual arts. Youth and mentors together attend a series of specialized art classes in a variety of mediums at the Art Center.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
